A former dairy town with a water tower and Pioneer Boulevard

The city’s own environmental report describes Artesia as a dairy district settled by Dutch and Portuguese farmers. The inactive water tower on Clarkdale Avenue marks the site of a 1911 artesian well, and the Spanish-style Frampton-Dantema House from 1929 now serves as the historical museum on Alburtis Avenue. It is a city of older homes today, and about three in four were built before 1980.

Pioneer Boulevard is the city’s international cultural district, full of Indian-owned stores and restaurants that the city calls a major source of economic activity. A shop or restaurant with carpet or upholstered seating has a choice of methods, and the right one depends on the floor and on when the space is empty.

Water in the Artesia system, run by Golden State Water with groundwater partly bought from the City of Cerritos, comes in around 11 grains per gallon, which counts as hard. Some addresses may be served by another supplier, so your bill is the place to check. Hard water is dissolved minerals, and the usual advice for carpet in any water is a thorough rinse. Ash is rarely a worry here, since the county fire hazard map classes virtually all of Artesia as non-wildland.

A true split between owners and renters

  1. Half and half

Artesia splits almost evenly, with about half of occupied homes rented and half lived in by their owners. Owners can follow a maintenance schedule, while renters often work to a lease date.

  2. Houses with small buildings among them

About two thirds of units are detached houses. The rest are mostly duplexes, fourplexes and small apartment buildings, so a request may come from a family house or from a rental unit.

  3. Sixties and fifties

The 1960s and 1950s built the most homes here. Older homes tend to have older carpet, and if yours has gone a long time between cleanings, say so when you call.

Shops, small buildings and family rooms

With Pioneer Boulevard businesses, duplexes and family houses all in one small city, commercial carpet cleaning, residential carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning each have their place. Storefront carpet and house carpet are different jobs, and the seating in both is another. Ask about each by phone.

Questions from Artesia

Can a business in Artesia get its carpet cleaned outside opening hours?
The phone line is open round the clock, every day, and the form takes requests at any hour. Tell the office when the space is quiet and what the floor is made of, and the plan is built around that.
What is low-moisture cleaning, and when does it make sense?
The Carpet and Rug Institute describes it as applying a cleaning agent, letting it dry, then vacuuming up the soil it has loosened, which keeps downtime short. Hot-water extraction is described as the deeper clean for soil a vacuum cannot reach.
How long until customers can walk on a cleaned floor?
It depends on how dry the carpet is. The Carpet and Rug Institute says drying after extraction often takes 6 to 12 hours, and that fans and ventilation help. Nobody can promise a number for a particular floor, so plan the reopening with the technician.
A customer spilled a drink on the carpet. What should staff do?
Dab it up with a dry white cloth rather than rubbing, working from the edges inward. Test any product on a hidden patch first, and rinse out whatever you use, since the Carpet and Rug Institute says detergent left in the fiber makes carpet re-soil quickly.
