Fireplace and flue

Chimney cleaning for Los Angeles County fireplaces

A crew puts down drop cloths, brushes the deposits out of the flue and vacuums the soot from the firebox. This is cleaning, not repair, and we tell you where the visit stops.

When the chimney comes to mind

Some people call before the first cold night. Others call because something is off.

  • I haven’t lit the fireplace in ages and want it ready

NFPA 211 asks for a chimney to be inspected at least once a year, even when the fireplace is rarely used. Cleaning takes care of the deposits. The inspection is a separate question, and we will tell you plainly when you call which one you need.

  • Smoke is coming back into the room

Stop lighting fires until you know why. A cleaning can be part of the answer, but a fireplace that will not draw can have other causes, and we will not guess at them for you.

    Call any hour
  • There’s soot on the hearth and it rubs off on everything

Burning leaves deposits, and loose soot in the firebox ends up on floors and sleeves. A cleaning clears the firebox as well as the flue.

  • We bought a house with a fireplace and have no records

You may not know when it was last cleaned or checked. Cleaning is a reasonable place to start. Whether the chimney is in good shape is a question for whoever inspects it.

What a chimney visit covers

  1. Protect the room

Drop cloths go down across the hearth and the floor around it, and anything close by is moved or covered. The point is to keep the soot where it started.

  2. See what is there

We look at the firebox and the visible part of the flue to judge how heavy the deposits are. That look is for planning the cleaning. It is not an inspection report.

  3. Brush the flue

Brushes go up the flue and bring the deposits down into the firebox. This is dusty by nature, which is why the first step comes first.

  4. Vacuum and tidy

Soot is vacuumed out of the firebox and off the hearth. The cloths are folded away with the mess inside.

  5. Say what we saw

If something looked cracked, loose or wrong, we tell you and stop there. Repairs are not part of this service, and we do not promise any.

Fireplaces in Los Angeles homes

A Los Angeles fireplace often sits unused for most of the year, then gets lit on the first cold night. A yearly inspection is advised even for a fireplace like that. Homes across the county have different chimneys, brick or masonry, metal, or a gas-log fireplace, so tell us which you have when you book and we can plan the visit around it.
  • NFPA 211 calls for chimneys, fireplaces and vents to be inspected at least once a year for soundness, deposits and clearances, with cleaning and repair as needed, even if the fireplace is rarely used.Source

Getting the fireplace ready

The fireplace must be completely cold, with no warm ash or embers. Move rugs, cushions and anything breakable away from the hearth, and clear the path from the front door. If you are not sure the chimney is sound, hold off lighting fires until someone has inspected it.

Questions about chimney cleaning

How often should I have my chimney cleaned?
NFPA 211 sets an inspection at least once a year, with cleaning and repair when needed, even if you rarely light the fireplace. How often the cleaning itself is needed depends on how much you use the fireplace and what the inspection finds. There is no single number.
Is chimney cleaning the same as a chimney inspection?
No. An inspection looks at soundness, deposits and clearances, and cleaning deals with the deposits. If you want soundness and clearances checked, ask for an inspection by name, and ask what it includes.
Do you repair chimneys?
This service is cleaning. We do not promise repairs, and if we see something that looks wrong we tell you and leave it for you to decide who to call.
Will cleaning make a mess in my living room?
The first step is protecting the floor and the last one is vacuuming. Chimney work is dusty by nature, so a little help from you makes it easier. Move small items and breakables away from the hearth beforehand.
Do you clean chimneys for businesses?
We work in homes and businesses across all 88 cities of Los Angeles County. For a shop or restaurant with a fireplace, tell us what kind of chimney it is and we will say plainly what a cleaning visit covers.

  • Allison C.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

  • Crystal M.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

  • Daniel R.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.
