Six counties around one bay, one air district

The six Bay Area counties we serve share a sky and a regulator. The National Weather Service office for the region is based in Monterey and covers 11 counties across the San Francisco and Monterey Bay regions. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District covers the nine counties that surround the bay, and San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin all sit inside it.

That matters for sofas and rugs more than it first seems. The Air District warns that fine-particle pollution can reach unhealthy levels in winter and during wildfire events at any time of year, and on September 9, 2020 it reported smoke turning the sky dark or orange across the region. During heavy smoke it suggests a HEPA air purifier that produces no ozone, or a MERV 13 or better filter in the heating and cooling system. Once the air clears, fabric that kept the smell is a good reason to phone us.

Summer fog, the Golden Gate and slow drying

Around the bay the damp season can be summer. The weather service explains that coastal fog is most common then, when air warmed over the ocean is pushed toward shore by the usual northwest winds, and it likens the mouth of the bay to a funnel that carries the fog through the Golden Gate toward Oakland and Berkeley. Marine air also spills inland through the San Bruno gap west of the airport, and a marine layer can linger over the coast for days or weeks under a temperature inversion. In San Francisco, most of which lies below 200 feet, the Air District says that layer flows across nearly the whole city.

Cool, moist air slows the drying of a freshly cleaned carpet, so on a gray week we go over airflow and fans with you on the phone. Spring and fall can bring the opposite: Diablo winds, hot and dry from the northeast, which the weather service ties to high pressure over Nevada and lower pressure along the central coast.

Many water systems behind the tap

The region does not drink from a single source. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission runs the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System, which serves San Francisco and sells water to 26 agencies in Alameda, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties; 85 percent of that water is Sierra Nevada snowmelt held in Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. East Bay Municipal Utility District supplies Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro and other East Bay cities from the Mokelumne River watershed. In Marin, Marin Water serves ten of the eleven towns and cities, mostly with rain that falls on the Mt. Tamalpais watershed, and North Marin Water District serves the Novato area.

Hardness follows the source. In Santa Clara County, Valley Water puts the average hardness of local groundwater above 250 mg/L, against less than 120 in its treated surface water, and Zone 7 Water Agency, the Tri-Valley wholesaler, reports groundwater averaging 318 mg/L against 88 in its treated surface water. In central and eastern Contra Costa, the Contra Costa Water District serves about 550,000 people with water drawn from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Hard water can leave a mineral film in fibers, which is why the rinse step deserves care at a hard-water address.

Prewar flats and postwar suburbs

Homes differ a great deal from one county to the next. Federal housing surveys put the median San Francisco home at 1946, with about 45 percent built in 1939 or earlier, and roughly six in ten households there rent. Across the line in San Mateo County the median year is 1966 and more than half of all homes are detached single-family houses. The typical home in Santa Clara County dates from 1975, and in Contra Costa County from 1978, where about two in three homes are detached houses. A rug on an old hardwood floor and wall-to-wall carpet in a newer house both get a method chosen for the fiber and for what lies underneath it.

The Bay Area counties we serve

San Francisco is a city and a county at once, so it has a single page. San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin counties each have their own page, with a map and the list of their cities.

Questions from the Bay Area

Which parts of the Bay Area do you serve?
San Francisco and the cities of San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin counties, every one of them listed on this page. If your address is somewhere else in the Bay Area, call (844) 966-2005 and the office will tell you whether it is covered.
Are the reviews on this page from Bay Area customers?
They are the reviews customers left on our business listing, for the company as a whole. None of them is tied to a city or a county, and this page does not claim any of them for the Bay Area.
How do I book a cleaning in the Bay Area?
Call (844) 966-2005 at any hour, or send the request form with your address and what needs cleaning. The office confirms the details and the visit with you.
Does the summer fog change how a carpet is cleaned?
The cleaning is the same, but drying can take longer when cool, damp air sits over the coast for days. Opening windows on the dry side of the house and running fans helps, and we go over it with you when you call.
Do you clean after wildfire smoke?
Yes. Upholstery, rugs and carpet that hold a smoky smell can be cleaned, and air duct cleaning is one of our services. Results depend on the fabric and on how much smoke it took in, so no one can promise that every trace will come out.

What customers say on Google

A selection of our 5-star reviews on Google.

  • Allison C.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

  • Crystal M.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

  • Daniel R.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.
