What rug owners call about

Rug trouble tends to start with a spill, a pet or a rug that has simply gone dull.

  • I spilled something and I think the rug is ruined

Stop there. Blot with a dry white cloth and do not rub, because rubbing pushes the stain deeper. Then call us before you reach for a spray, since the wrong product can set a dye.

    Call any hour
  • My cat had an accident on the Persian rug

Early treatment matters. Once urine has soaked down into the foundation it is much harder to reach, and we will not promise the smell comes out. Heat can also set urine in man-made fibers, so the method matters.

  • My shag rug is matted flat

A matted pile needs grooming, not just washing. Grooming evens the pile and removes the marks the wand leaves, and it is a normal last step when a cut-pile rug is cleaned.

  • The fringe looks gray and the edges look worn

On a handmade rug the fringe is usually the ends of the foundation threads, not trim added on top, so it needs gentler handling than the pile. We check it before we start and tell you if it is already fragile.

How a rug visit goes

  1. Tell us what it is

Give us the size, the fiber if you know it, and a read of the tag. Photos of the stains and the back help.

  2. We look before we wet

We check the front, the back and the fringe, and note holes, worn spots and old repairs, so nothing is a surprise later.

  3. We test the dye

A damp white cloth on a hidden corner shows whether the color moves. If it does, the plan changes.

  4. We choose the method with you

Most rugs are cleaned right where they lie, in your home. A rug that needs a full wash is taken off site and brought back clean, and we tell you which kind yours is before anything gets wet.

  5. Clean, rinse, dry, groom

Spots are treated first, then the rug is cleaned and rinsed well, because detergent left in the pile attracts dirt again. The pile is groomed and the rug dries with air moving.

Rugs and everyday Los Angeles life

A lot of Los Angeles life runs through the patio door, and the rug nearest it takes the grit first. In the dry season the windows stay open and fine dust drifts in. Vacuuming takes the loose dry soil, and cleaning is for the soil a vacuum cannot reach.
  • The Carpet and Rug Institute’s residential standard tells owners of woven Oriental, Turkish and Persian rugs to consult a professional rug cleaning service, and notes that some rugs are labeled dry-clean-only.Source
  • A trade article on viscose rugs says viscose has weak, shedding fibers and can bleed and turn yellow when wet, so a dye test comes first.Source

Before the visit and after it

Vacuum the top of the rug gently and stay clear of the fringe. Blot spills with a dry white cloth, test any product in a hidden corner, and skip laundry detergent, which can dye the fiber. After cleaning, keep furniture off the rug until it is fully dry, and never roll or fold a damp rug.

Questions about area rug cleaning

What kinds of rugs can you clean?
Wool, cotton, silk, viscose and synthetic rugs all get cleaned differently, and most can be cleaned one way or another. The fiber, the dye and the way the rug is made decide how. Read us the tag or send photos, and we start there.
Can a viscose or art silk rug be cleaned?
Sometimes, and it carries more risk than most. Viscose is also sold as banana silk and bamboo silk, and it can yellow and stiffen when it gets wet. We test the dye first and tell you what we see.
Do you clean rugs at my home or take them away?
Both. Most rugs are cleaned on site, in your home. Three things are hard to do on a living-room floor, though: getting dry soil out of the foundation, washing the rug all the way through, and drying it under control, so a rug that needs that is taken off site for a full wash. Which one your rug needs is one of the first things we settle on the phone.
Can I put a rug in the washing machine?
Only if the label says machine washable. The Carpet and Rug Institute says small machine-washable rugs can be washed at 90 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit with a mild detergent. If the label says dry-clean-only, call first, because many dry cleaners do not clean rugs.

What customers say on Google

  • Allison C.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

  • Crystal M.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

  • Daniel R.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.
