Upholstery and leather

Upholstery and leather cleaning across Los Angeles County

We read the cleaning code on your sofa tag and test a hidden spot before any liquid touches the fabric, because the fiber decides the method. Then we clean seats, arms and backs the way that fabric allows, and leather gets its own method.

What people call about on sofas and chairs

Sofa trouble tends to start with a stain, a smell or a seat that has gone dull.

  • There is a dark patch where everyone sits

Seat cushions and arm tops take the most skin and hair contact, and body oils darken fabric slowly enough that you stop noticing. On the cream seat in the photo you can see exactly where the cleaning stopped.

  • I scrubbed the spill and now it is worse

Blot, do not rub. Rubbing spreads the spill and roughs up the fabric. If the tag says X, no liquid cleaner belongs on it at all, so call us before you try anything.

    Call any hour
  • The cushions smell and I cannot tell why

A smell on the surface is one job. A smell that has soaked into the padding or filling is another, and it is harder to reach. We tell you which one we think you have before we start.

  • My leather is dry and rubbed at the arms

Leather has its own method, apart from fabric. We clean and condition it. Cracks that have already opened are wear, and cleaning does not close them.

How a sofa gets cleaned

  1. Read the tag

The code is usually on a tag under a cushion or along the frame. Tell us what it says, or send a photo. If there is no tag, we identify the fiber and test more carefully.

  2. Vacuum and look

Loose soil comes out of the seams first, so cleaning does not work it deeper. We note worn spots, dye problems and old stains.

  3. Test a hidden spot

A small dab under the skirt or on the back shows whether the color moves or the fabric reacts. We wait and check before we go on.

  4. Clean by the code

W fabrics get a water-based cleaner, S fabrics a solvent with no water, W/S either, and X fabrics nothing wet at all. We do not run one method over every sofa.

  5. Let it dry with air moving

Cushions go back only on a dry frame, and nobody sits on the seat until it is dry to the touch all the way through. How long that takes depends on the fabric, the filling and the room, so we name no number.

Soft furniture in a county of dust and smoke

Los Angeles homes hold everything from leather sofas to linen sectionals to dining chairs with fabric seats, and each wants a different method. The county also lives with wildfire smoke and Santa Ana dust, and upholstery is porous, so it takes in what hangs in the air.
  • The Association for Contract Textiles says the industry’s upholstery standard references the codes W, S, WS and X, and that hot-water extraction or steam cleaning is not recommended for W and WS fabrics.Source
  • FEMA’s smoke-damage guide says soot and ash can damage porous materials such as upholstery and clothing, making them nearly impossible to clean.Source

Before we arrive and after we leave

Vacuum the sofa and lift off loose cushions if the tag says they come off. Blot any wet spill with a dry white cloth and leave the rest alone. Afterward keep people off the seat until it is fully dry. If a stain is old, tell us what made it.

Questions about upholstery & leather cleaning

What do the codes W, S, W/S and X on my sofa tag mean?
W means a water-based cleaner, S means a solvent only, with no water, and W/S means either. X means vacuum or light brushing only, with no liquid at all. The furniture industry puts these codes on tags so that whoever cleans the piece knows what it can take.
Can my sofa be steam cleaned?
It depends on the code. The Association for Contract Textiles says hot-water extraction and steam are not recommended for W and W/S fabrics, and that the codes alone are not enough. That is why we test a hidden spot too.
Is leather cleaned the same way as fabric?
No. Leather has its own cleaning method, apart from fabric, and we clean and condition it. Tell us the kind of leather if you know it.
Will cleaning change the color of my sofa?
That is what the hidden-spot test is for. If a color moves, we stop and tell you before anything touches the seat. We stand behind our work with a satisfaction guarantee.
Can you clean a sofa after wildfire smoke or ash?
We can clean the fabric, but we will not promise it comes back the way it was. For light soot, FEMA’s guide calls for HEPA-vacuuming couches, and it sends heavy damage to a professional contractor.

What customers say on Google

  • Allison C.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

  • Crystal M.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

  • Daniel R.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.
