What pet owners tell us on the phone

These are the situations people describe, in about the words they use.

  • It smells like pee, but I cannot find the spot

Old urine can dry out and disappear to the eye. Humane World for Animals suggests a black light to show old spots, which you can outline with chalk. Not every stain is known to glow, so a dark room is a clue, not proof.

  • I scrubbed it and the spot got bigger

Rubbing is a common mistake. The Carpet and Rug Institute says to blot with a dry white cloth. Work from the edges of the spot toward the middle, so it does not spread.

  • My dog keeps going back to the same corner

Strong-smelling cleaners can encourage a pet to mark the same place again. Tell us what has already been used on the spot, because that history shapes the plan.

  • The stain has been there for months

Old stains are harder than fresh ones, and light carpet shows everything. We test a hidden corner first and tell you what we see. We cannot promise that every stain comes out.

  • Is the pad under the carpet ruined?

Urine moves down, and the pad soaks it up. If it has reached the pad, parts of the carpet and pad may need replacing. We tell you what we find, and what it means, before you decide anything.

How a pet-stain visit goes

  1. Show us the spots

You walk the technician through where the accidents happened and what has already been tried. Then they check along walls, corners and doorways for the places you missed.

  2. Test a hidden spot

Before anything goes on the carpet, a hidden corner is tested. Pretesting is standard advice in the carpet trade, because a wrongly used product, ammonia for one, can change a carpet’s color.

  3. Treat each spot on its own

Marked spots are treated before the room is cleaned, not as an afterthought to it. Heat can set urine into some man-made fibers, which is why we ask what your carpet is made of.

  4. Rinse, extract and check

The room is cleaned and the spots are checked again, by eye and by nose. A spot that still smells after cleaning often points at the pad, and we say so.

  5. Tell you what comes next

You get a plain account of what improved, what did not, and whether the pad or the carpet itself should be replaced. If a smell stays, we say so, because it usually points to what lies under the carpet.

Pets in Los Angeles homes and rentals

Many people in Los Angeles live in rentals and condos, where the carpet may not be theirs to replace. Then the useful question is how far the urine went. A surface problem can be cleaned. A pad problem may call for a different answer, and a landlord or an association may have a say in it.
  • Humane World for Animals says old dried urine can be invisible, a black light can show it, and urine that has soaked into the padding may mean replacing carpet and padding.Source
  • Ohio State’s veterinary hospital says that after blotting cat urine, you should use an enzymatic cleaner, never ammonia, and replace the padding if the smell persists.Source

What to do before we arrive

Blot a fresh accident with a dry white cloth and keep the pet away from the spot. Skip ammonia, vinegar and laundry detergent. If you want to use something while you wait, Humane World for Animals and Ohio State’s veterinary hospital both name enzymatic cleaners made for pet waste. Tell us what you used.

Questions about pet stain & odor removal

Can pet urine be removed from carpet?
Often, when it is treated early and has not reached the pad. If it has soaked into the padding, parts of the carpet and pad may need to be replaced. Nobody can honestly promise that every stain and every smell will come out.
Why not rent a steam cleaner for a urine spot?
Heat can set urine in man-made fibers by bonding its protein to them. That is why the first step matters, and why we ask what your carpet is made of before we start.
How soon should I call after an accident?
Right away is best. Blot, do not rub, and call. The quicker any spill is treated the better, and urine that has soaked into the pad makes the job harder.
When can my pet go back on the carpet?
When it is dry. Drying after extraction often takes 6 to 12 hours, so keep your pet in another room until then. If your pet has a health condition, ask your vet about the products used.
