Cleaning for Avalon homes on Catalina Island

Avalon is part of Los Angeles County, so it is part of the service area. Getting to the island adds logistics that are best settled by phone, so call (844) 966-2005 or send the form and ask how a visit would work.

A harbor town of about 3,500 people, built around the bay

Avalon’s center is the water. The Catalina Casino stands at the north end of the bay, the green Pleasure Pier reaches into the middle of it, and the Crescent Avenue waterfront walk runs behind the three main beaches. A harbor town can carry sand indoors on shoes, and sand is dry soil. The Carpet and Rug Institute notes that a vacuum takes up most loose dry soil before any water touches the carpet, which is why a thorough vacuuming comes first at a visit.

Rain is light on the island, about a foot a year, and roughly 38% of the city’s land is in the Very High fire hazard zone. If ash or smoke gets indoors, Los Angeles County Public Health recommends HEPA vacuuming and says heavy soot or odor is a job for a professional. Nobody can promise that a given carpet or sofa will come fully clean afterward.

Old buildings, nearly half of them rented

  1. Half own, half rent

Owners hold about half of the occupied homes and renters the other half, so the end of a lease is a natural time to book carpet cleaning.

  2. Small multi-unit buildings

Only about a third of units are detached houses. Around half sit in buildings of two to 19 units, so mention stairs and access when you call.

  3. Mostly built before 1980

More than eight in ten homes predate 1980, and nearly half predate 1940. Older floors and older carpet are the norm here, so a short description over the phone goes a long way.

What a harbor town tends to need

Sand and salt air point to carpet and rug cleaning, and with half the homes rented, move-out cleaning and upholstery come up too. Mattresses, sofas and curtains hold dust mites as well as carpets do, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences says the aim is to reduce them, since they cannot be eliminated.

Across the channel

The nearest places on the list are on the mainland, among them Rancho Palos Verdes and Long Beach. Whether a visit can happen on a given date is a question for the phone.

Questions from Avalon

Do you come out to Catalina Island?
Avalon is in Los Angeles County, and the company serves all of it. How a visit is arranged across the water is a question for the office, so call (844) 966-2005 or send the form and ask. The office is open around the clock.
Does beach sand end up in carpet, and what can be done about it?
Sand is dry soil, so it gets carried in on shoes and settles into the pile. The Carpet and Rug Institute says vacuuming removes most dry soil before cleaning, and a thorough rinse afterward leaves no residue in the fiber.
How often should an Avalon rental’s carpet be cleaned?
The Carpet and Rug Institute says as needed and at least every 24 months, following the carpet maker’s schedule. With about half of Avalon’s homes rented, a lease end is often the natural point to schedule it.
A burst pipe has water on the floor of my Avalon apartment. What now?
Stop the source if you can and get air moving, and keep the room open instead of shutting it up. The Carpet and Rug Institute’s guidance is that carpet should dry within about 12 hours, so a floor still wet after that needs a professional. Call (844) 966-2005.
