Hills that block the fog, heat that arrives from inland

Reports say the Oakland Hills often block the cool fog that reaches Oakland, and that heatwaves from inland are felt much more in Orinda. The nearest 30-year weather station, in Berkeley about 5 miles away, puts the July high at 74 F and the January low at 43 F, which describes a cooler place than Orinda’s hot spells. Heat helps a cleaned room dry; airflow and humidity still decide how long it takes.

Orinda has the highest share of detached houses in the county, about 95 percent of units, and the lowest share of rented homes, about 9 percent. The middle of the stock dates from 1960, 82 percent of units are older than 1980, and half are older than 1960.
