A 1966 median home and water from two very different sources
Seal Beach is old: the median home was built in 1966, and 89 percent of its 14,632 housing units were built before 1980, against 5 percent from 2000 on. Only 36 percent are detached houses, while 21 percent are attached homes, 17 percent sit in buildings holding 2 to 9 units and another 17 percent in buildings holding 10 to 49 units. Owners hold 77 percent of occupied homes.
The city utilities division blends two waters that differ a lot. Water pumped from three city wells averaged 4.3 grains per gallon of hardness in the 2025 report, about 73 milligrams per liter, which is moderately hard on the USGS scale, while imported Metropolitan water averaged 14 grains, or 236, which is very hard. The report gives no blend ratio, so the water at your tap falls somewhere between. Golden State Water serves parts of the city, so your bill names your supplier.
The Long Beach Daugherty Field weather station gives an average July high of 81.4 F, and the weather service notes that when the marine layer is shallow, coastal and inland cities dry differently. It also says Santa Ana winds are dry and most common from September through May.

Older homes and sofas
Carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning lead in a city of 1960s houses, condos and townhomes. Rug cleaning suits hard floors, and tile and grout cleaning fits bathrooms where the harder imported water leaves mineral spots. Requests from Old Town, Leisure World and Surfside follow the same steps.
- Carpet cleaning in Seal BeachHot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning. Hot water and solution go in, and suction pulls the dirt back out.
- Upholstery & leather cleaning in Seal BeachSofas, chairs and leather. The cleaning code on the tag (W, S, W/S or X) tells us whether the fabric takes water, solvent or neither.
- Tile & grout cleaning in Seal BeachTile floors and grout lines. Grout made of cement is porous, so sealing is part of the conversation.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.
My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.
Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.
