A 1923 townsite and a city of single-family lots
Temple City began as a planned town. Founder Walter P. Temple laid out Temple City Park facing Las Tunas Drive in 1923, and a Pacific Electric depot was added beside it. The original townsite is bounded by Garibaldi, Baldwin, Live Oak and Encinita avenues, and statues of railcar passengers on Rosemead Boulevard recall the Pacific Electric line. The houses that filled the grid came mostly later, after the war, so older floors under newer coverings are worth mentioning on the call.
Most homes here are detached houses, and many have their own laundry room, which brings the dryer vent into the picture. National fire data count roughly 13,800 home fires a year with a dryer involved in ignition, and about a third were put down to failure to clean. The vent is what carries lint and exhaust air outside, and a vent that has never been cleaned is a fair reason to ask.
Houses on a mid-century grid
Eight in ten are detached houses
About six homes in ten are owner-occupied, and eight units in ten are detached houses. A house usually has more bedrooms and more rooms of carpet to describe.
SourceA typical home from 1959
A quarter of homes predate 1950, and one in eight is from this century, so two quite different generations of floor coverings may be in play.
SourceRenters are a minority
Renters make up a bit over a third of households, and about one unit in eight sits in a building of two to forty-nine units.

Bedrooms, laundry rooms and living rooms
In a city of houses, carpet cleaning is the everyday request, with dryer vent cleaning for the laundry room and upholstery cleaning for the family-room sofa. Mattress cleaning and rug cleaning round out the list.
- Carpet cleaningHot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning. Hot water and solution go in, and suction pulls the dirt back out.
- Dryer vent cleaningLint cleared from the dryer vent so air can leave the house. The U.S. Fire Administration lists failure to clean as the leading factor in home dryer fires.
- Upholstery & leather cleaningSofas, chairs and leather. The cleaning code on the tag (W, S, W/S or X) tells us whether the fabric takes water, solvent or neither.
