Colfax Meadows, the studio lot and the canyon trails

The neighborhood takes its name from the studio lot Mack Sennett opened in 1927, now Radford Studio Center. Colfax Meadows, one of its best-known pockets, was laid out in the 1880s with generous lots, and zoning has kept lots large since 1988. Bigger lots tend to mean bigger houses, with more rooms, more rugs and more furniture to look after.

Wilacre Park and Fryman Canyon Park, both Santa Monica Mountains parks of well over 100 acres, are inside Studio City. Anyone who walks those trails carries a little of them home on their shoes, and entry rugs and hallway carpet catch it first. Parts of the neighborhood also lie in the city’s Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and it is the hillside lots that carry the exposure.

If ash got inside a house, County Public Health advises a HEPA-filter vacuum, and says ordinary household and shop vacuums are not recommended for ash because they blow fine particles into the air. Call (844) 966-2005 to ask whether cleaning fits what you are looking at on a rug or a sofa.

Courtyard apartments, renters and older buildings

  1. Courtyard apartments on the main streets

The flatlands are low-scale residential streets with courtyard apartments along the major roads, and the hillsides and canyons south of Ventura Boulevard are almost all single-family.

  2. More than half rent

In the neighborhood’s ZIP code, a little over half of occupied homes are rented. About half of the housing units are in buildings of five or more, and about four in ten are detached houses.

  3. Built before 1980

About six units in ten went up before 1980, which is a good reason to bring up any rug that came with the house.

Rugs and sofas first, then the floors

Rug cleaning tops the list in houses with hard floors and the rugs on them. Fiber decides the method, and many rugs are better washed in a plant than on the spot. Upholstery cleaning comes next for sofas that have stayed through every season, and carpet cleaning covers the apartments.

Questions from Studio City

What should I check on a rug before calling?
Look for a tag with the fiber and any care note. Some rugs are labeled dry-clean only, and viscose, sold as art silk or bamboo silk, can yellow when wet. Have the fiber and the size ready when you call (844) 966-2005.
What do the codes on a sofa tag mean?
W means spot cleaning with a water-based product, S means solvent only and no water, WS allows either, and X means vacuum or light brushing only. Textile trade guidance says hot-water extraction is not recommended on W and WS fabrics, so read the tag before anyone wets a cushion.
Is Studio City inside the service area?
Yes. Studio City is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, and our service area is all of Los Angeles County.
Do you clean carpet in Studio City apartments?
Yes. Carpet cleaning covers apartments as well as houses. With more than half of homes rented here, tell the office whether you are the tenant, the owner or the manager.
Can I send a request in the middle of the night?
Yes. The online form takes requests around the clock, and the office keeps full 24-hour days, seven days a week.
