Oil hills, an old adobe and a townsite named Newmark

Montebello began as a 200-acre townsite called Newmark, with the rest of the tract cut into five-acre plots. Then Standard Oil struck oil in 1917, and the hills became oil fields. The Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe, built in 1845 and restored, is the oldest structure still standing in the city and sits in Sanchez Adobe Park. Newmark, Montebello Hills and South Montebello are all neighborhood names here.
