Farmland between two rivers, cleared for tract homes

After the war, farmland between the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River was cleared for tract homes in the 1950s, and voters approved incorporation in 1958. The housing still shows it: more than eight homes in ten were built before 1980, and nearly half in that same decade. Pico and Rivera, the two communities in the city’s history, are old names rather than districts on a map.

Historic Whittier Boulevard has a city revitalization program, the Pico Rivera Golf Club sits near the Whittier Narrows Dam, the Sports Arena is on the north side, and the open-air Towne Center runs along Washington Boulevard. A boulevard of shops, a venue and a shopping center all add up to commercial floors alongside the houses.

Santa Ana winds, strong, hot and dust-bearing, are part of the basin’s weather, and the dry soil they bring is what a vacuum is for. The city’s water division serves about three quarters of the land and the Pico Water District about a quarter. The water is hard in both systems, and harder in the district’s, so the rinse is worth a question to any cleaner.

Seven owners in ten, in houses from the fifties

  1. Owner-occupied houses

About seven homes in ten are lived in by their owners, and about three in four units are single-family houses. A smaller share sits in apartment buildings or mobile homes, so say which kind of home you have.

  2. Ducts that have been there a while

A house from the 1950s has had its ducts and registers for a long time. The EPA says routine duct cleaning is not needed, and names visible mold, vermin and ducts clogged with excessive dust and debris as the reasons to look.

Houses, pets and a duct question

In a city of tract houses with yards, carpet cleaning and pet stain and odor treatment are natural places to start. Humane World for Animals says enzymatic cleaners break down pet waste odors and cautions against ammonia or vinegar, whose strong smells can encourage a pet to re-mark. Air duct cleaning follows the EPA’s reasons, not a calendar.

Questions from Pico Rivera

Why shouldn’t I use vinegar on a pet accident?
Humane World for Animals says to avoid ammonia or vinegar because strong smells can encourage a pet to re-mark, and Ohio State’s veterinary hospital says never to use ammonia on cat urine. Blot first, use an enzymatic cleaner, and call if the smell persists.
What if urine soaked through to the pad?
Humane World for Animals says the job is harder once urine reaches the padding and that portions of carpet and padding may need replacing. Ohio State’s veterinary hospital advises replacing the pad and cleaning beneath if the smell persists.
Do you clean shops on Whittier Boulevard?
Yes. Shops along the boulevard fall under commercial carpet cleaning, and the form or the phone is the place to describe the space.
Does hardness matter, with two water systems in town?
The two systems differ, and the Pico Water District’s is the harder of the two. Hardness describes the supply, and the thing to ask a technician about is rinsing.
Can I fill in the form in the middle of the night?
Yes. The middle of the night works for the form, and the office never closes.
