Dairy farms, farmhouses and the Norwalk Manor tract
Norwalk was a dairy center by 1900, and its oldest buildings are farmhouses. The Sproul House, a Stick Style farmhouse built by the city’s founder, Gilbert Sproul, now houses the Gilbert Sproul Museum, and the Hargitt House Museum on Mapledale Street, built in Stick and Eastlake styles, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The big change came after the war, when the Norwalk Manor subdivision went up in the late 1940s.
That postwar building shows in the housing: more than four homes in five predate 1980, and nearly half went up in the 1950s. Cerritos College, a public community college, adds large public buildings to a mostly residential city. Carmenita, Civic Center, Norwalk Hills, Studebaker, South Norwalk and Norwalk Manor are all neighborhood names here.
Rain is light here, about a foot a year, and summers run warm. Three suppliers serve the city, and the water from all three runs hard, so a thorough rinse is what to ask about.
Houses first, mostly from the fifties
Two owners for every renter
About two homes in three are lived in by their owners, and nearly three in four units are single-family houses. About one in six is in a building of five or more units, so mention the floor and parking if you rent in one.
SourceA fifties peak
Original floors from that decade may long since have been replaced, so the carpet’s age depends on the last renovation. Say roughly how old yours is when you call.
SourceLint and laundry rooms
The National Fire Protection Association finds that more than a quarter of home fires involving dryers started with dust, fiber or lint. Dryer vent cleaning is one of the twelve services.

Where the services fit in Norwalk
Carpet cleaning and rug cleaning cover the main rooms of a house. Dryer vent cleaning belongs on the list for the laundry rooms of a city built mostly of houses. Commercial carpet cleaning covers the offices, classrooms and shops that sit among them.
- Carpet cleaningHot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning. Hot water and solution go in, and suction pulls the dirt back out.
- Area rug cleaningShag, woven and delicate rugs. The fiber decides the method, so viscose and Oriental rugs get a careful look first, and some rugs are better washed in a plant.
- Dryer vent cleaningLint cleared from the dryer vent so air can leave the house. The U.S. Fire Administration lists failure to clean as the leading factor in home dryer fires.
