A big, hot valley city built mostly in recent decades

Santa Clarita covers about 74 square miles and became a city in the late 1980s, the largest area in California to incorporate up to that time. It is made up of communities like Valencia, Newhall, Saugus and Canyon Country, and the galleries, restaurants and wineries of Old Town Newhall add commercial floors to the mix of homes.

Heat and fire shape the home here. July afternoons run hot, averaging in the mid 90s, so air conditioners work through long seasons. Roughly 70 percent of the city’s land sits in the state’s Very High fire hazard zone, which is a good reason to know what to do about ash and smoke. On ducts, the EPA does not recommend routine cleaning, and says it makes sense when there is visible mold, vermin or heavy dust and debris. After a nearby fire, guidance from the county and from FEMA is to keep the system off until most of the soot is cleaned up.

The valley’s water comes from more than one supplier and runs from hard to very hard depending on the supplier and the street, which is one more reason a good rinse matters when carpet is cleaned.

What the housing mix looks like

  1. Mostly newer homes

The typical home was built around the time the city incorporated, so carpet here is younger than in most of the county. Newer carpet still needs care, and the manufacturer’s schedule is the one that protects a warranty.

  2. Mostly owner-occupied

Seven in ten homes are lived in by their owners, and about six in ten are detached houses. That usually means more rooms and more carpet to describe on the phone.

  3. A quarter of homes share a building

About a quarter of homes are in buildings with several units, and a small number are mobile homes. In a shared building a leak can reach a neighbor’s floor, and water extraction is a service you can call about at any hour.

What the heat and the hills make likely

Large houses and long cooling seasons make air duct cleaning and carpet cleaning natural places to start, and dryer vent cleaning has the clearest safety case. A national fire-protection study counted nearly 14,000 home fires a year with a dryer involved in ignition, and about a third were caused by failing to clean.

Beyond the valley

San Fernando, Burbank, Glendale and Calabasas are among the closest cities we serve, and the same phone line covers them.

Questions from Santa Clarita

Do you serve Valencia, Newhall, Saugus and Canyon Country?
Yes. The service area is all of Los Angeles County, and those four communities are part of Santa Clarita. Give the office your address when you call (844) 966-2005.
Is duct cleaning worth it in a hot valley?
A hot climate is not a reason by itself. Duct cleaning is not routinely needed, and it makes sense when you can see mold, vermin, or ducts clogged with dust and debris. If you can see one of those, describe it on the call.
My carpet is fairly new. Does it need professional cleaning?
Carpet should be cleaned as needed and at least every 24 months, following the manufacturer’s schedule if a warranty applies. Traffic, pets and children shorten the interval.
What should I do first when ash gets inside?
Public health advice is to wear an N95 mask, sweep gently, then wet-mop, and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, since ordinary vacuums blow fine particles around. Call afterward about the carpet and upholstery.
Can I call in the middle of the night?
Yes. The office is open 24 hours a day, every day of the week, and online requests are accepted at any time.
