Rural estates, hot summers and a very high fire zone

The Town’s General Plan says residential development in Woodside can range from large rural estates with multiple accessory buildings, such as Mountain Home Road, to smaller single-family homes within compact neighborhoods. Federal housing estimates show a town of houses: 96 percent of the 2,062 housing units are detached, none are in buildings of five or more, and only 224 of 1,784 occupied homes, about 13 percent, are rented. The median year built is 1965, and 347 units went up in 1939 or earlier. Accessory buildings mean more floors and more rugs than one address suggests, so list every building when you call.

The Town’s newsletter says a lot of Woodside is in a very high fire zone, a constant threat throughout the year. The air district’s advice in a smoke event is to stay indoors with windows and doors closed; afterward, rugs, upholstery and drapes are where odor tends to linger. The station at Woodside Fire Station 1, about half a mile away at 380 feet, lists a July high of 88 F and a January low of 38 F, and hot summers can dry a room fast, though drying a cleaned carpet often still takes 6 to 12 hours.

The water comes from Cal Water’s Bear Gulch District, with the City of Redwood City serving portions of town. Both 2025 reports average 62 mg/L of hardness, which converts to about 3.6 grains, and the table runs from 8.1 to 112. A thorough rinse after cleaning is the same advice in any water.

Fine rugs, many buildings and smoke-odor fabrics

Rug cleaning leads in estates, where wool and viscose rugs are cared for by fiber and dye. Drapery cleaning and upholstery cleaning matter after smoke, and ducts need a look only if soot or debris is visible at the registers.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

  • Daniel R.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.

Questions from Woodside

Is Woodside in a very high fire zone?
The Town’s newsletter says a lot of Woodside is in a very high fire zone. After smoke, ask about rugs, upholstery and drapes, which hold odor; no one can promise a smoke-marked piece comes fully clean.
Who supplies Woodside’s water?
Cal Water’s Bear Gulch District serves most of the town, with the City of Redwood City serving portions. Both report an average of 62 ppm, near 3.6 grains to the gallon, from San Francisco regional system water.
Can you clean rugs in the accessory buildings of a Woodside estate?
Yes. The General Plan describes estates with multiple accessory buildings, so give each building and its floors when you phone (844) 966-2005.
How hot does Woodside get, and does that dry carpet faster?
The Woodside station’s July high averages near 88 F. Heat helps, but airflow decides the pace, and the usual range is 6 to 12 hours with no exact time promised.
