Two communities, one steep and fire-exposed city

Before it became a single city, this was two communities, La Canada and Flintridge, and the streets still climb from the valley floor to about 2,400 feet in the highest neighborhood. Descanso Gardens, home to the largest camellia collection in North America, sits on the northern edge of the San Rafael Hills. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is at the eastern end, and Angeles Crest Highway begins at the southern end. Whether your street runs near the gardens, the lab or the highway, it is inside the service area.

About 99 percent of the city is mapped Very High fire hazard, and almost the entire city was evacuated in January 2025 during the Eaton Fire. For homes that took in smoke or ash, plain facts matter more than promises. Los Angeles County Public Health advises a HEPA vacuum, washing or discarding porous items such as linens and carpet, and, with central heating and air, considering the ducts and a MERV 13 filter. FEMA’s homeowner guide cautions that porous things like upholstery and clothing may be nearly impossible to clean after soot and ash, so the first step is a walk-through of what can and cannot be cleaned.

Water comes from more than one supplier, and hardness differs from one part of the city to another, so the rinse is worth a question to whoever cleans your carpet.

Mostly owners, mostly houses

  1. Nearly all owners

About seven homes in eight are lived in by their owners, so the person on the phone is usually the one who decides what gets cleaned.

  2. Detached houses

Nearly every home is a detached house, and apartment buildings are rare. Room counts, stairs and the rugs in each room are the details that help the office most.

  3. Mid-century

More than four homes in five were built before 1980, and the 1950s are the biggest decade. Original carpet, and the older floor under it, is worth a mention.

After smoke, and between fire seasons

Carpet and upholstery cleaning cover the surfaces that can be cleaned, and rug cleaning suits the rugs that matter most. Air duct cleaning needs weighing against the EPA’s cautious position, since it does not recommend routine cleaning. Heavy soot or smoke odor can call for a restoration contractor rather than a carpet cleaner.

Questions from La Canada Flintridge

Can smoke damage be cleaned out of carpet and upholstery?
Surface soil often can be. Cal OES notes that California’s smoke-damage standards were still being developed, so no cleaner can honestly promise a measured result. A walk-through shows what is cleanable.
Should I run my heating and cooling after a fire?
FEMA’s guide tells homeowners to hold off running the air handler until the worst of the soot is cleaned out. Ask a restoration contractor about heavy soot, and call (844) 966-2005 about the carpet and upholstery.
Is duct cleaning needed after smoke?
County health guidance says to consider it when a home has central HVAC. The EPA is more cautious: no routine cleaning, and a case only for visible mold, vermin or ducts packed with debris. Talk it through before deciding.
Do you cover both the Flintridge and La Canada sides?
Every address in the city. Give your street and say which side it is on.
Can I call about smoke or ash late at night?
Yes. The office is open all day and all night, and the online form takes requests at any hour.
