Old buildings, north-end fog and a firestorm on record

More than a third of Oakland’s housing, 37 percent or about 71,200 units, dates from 1939 or earlier, and the median build year is 1953. Homes that old often combine hard floors with area rugs, and some still hold original wall-to-wall carpet. The rug is a rug question, since wool and viscose pieces need a gentler method, and the carpet is a fiber-and-wear question.

Reports describe cooling maritime fog in the northern part of the city, though Oakland sits far enough inland that it often burns off by midday. The weather station at the Oakland Museum, about 3 miles from the city center, averages a July high of 71.6 F and a January low of 45.1 F. A cool, damp morning slows a cleaned carpet, so open a window once the fog lifts and run a fan. The Carpet and Rug Institute puts drying at often 6 to 12 hours, and nobody can promise one.

The state fire marshal’s history records that the Oakland Hills firestorm of October 1991 consumed 1,520 acres, destroyed 3,354 single-family dwellings and 437 apartment and condominium units, and killed 25 people. Smoke and ash questions are real here for that reason. The FEMA guide’s advice after smoke or ash is HEPA vacuuming of carpet and sofas, with the air handler left off while soot is heavy. The Bay Area Air District runs a Wildfire Air Quality Response Program for the region.

Oakland’s housing, in three facts

  1. Most homes are rented

About 58 percent of occupied homes, roughly 101,800, have tenants. Landlords, managers and renters can each send a request; give the day the unit empties and the number of carpeted rooms.

  2. Buildings of five units or more are common

They hold 36 percent of the housing, 68,863 units, and detached houses hold 41 percent. Name the hallways and stairwells when you call.

  3. Water arrives plant by plant

EBMUD’s 2024 report lists 12 to 32 ppm at three of its plants and 69 to 96 ppm at the Sobrante plant. It does not say which plant reaches a given street, so check with the district.

Which services come up most in Oakland

Carpet cleaning and rug cleaning lead in a city of older homes with mixed floors. Upholstery cleaning matters when a sofa has taken in smoke or ash, and air duct cleaning belongs in the conversation after a remodel or when registers show real debris, though the EPA treats it as a job for specific conditions.

  • Carpet cleaning in OaklandHot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning. Hot water and solution go in, and suction pulls the dirt back out.
  • Area rug cleaning in OaklandShag, woven and delicate rugs, cleaned in your home or taken off site for a full wash. The fiber decides the method, so viscose and Oriental rugs get a careful look first.
  • Air duct cleaning in OaklandFor ducts with visible mold, vermin or heavy dust and debris. EPA does not recommend it as a routine job, so ask us whether yours needs it.

What customers say on Google

  • Allison C.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

  • Crystal M.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

  • Daniel R.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.

Questions from Oakland

Can smoke or ash from a wildfire be cleaned out of carpet and sofas?
The FEMA guide starts with HEPA vacuuming and keeping the air handler off while soot is heavy. After that, hot-water extraction can lift what the vacuum leaves, though no one can promise every stain or smell will come out. The 1991 hills firestorm in the state fire marshal’s history is why the question is familiar here.
Does Oakland’s fog slow carpet drying?
In the north, reports describe maritime fog that often burns off by midday. Damp morning air gives a wet carpet little help, so airflow matters: a fan and an open window once the fog lifts. No exact drying time is promised.
I rent in Oakland. Who books the move-out cleaning?
Either side can start the request. More than half of Oakland’s occupied homes are rented. Give the keys-back date and the carpeted rooms.
Should I clean the ducts in my old Oakland house?
Not routinely. The EPA says duct cleaning makes sense for visible mold, vermin, renovation dust or heavy debris. With 37 percent of Oakland units built in 1939 or earlier, a remodel that left dust in the registers is one reason to ask.
Which EBMUD plant supplies my street?
The district’s report lists hardness by plant and does not say which plant reaches a given street. For carpet, a thorough rinse matters more than the number.
