Historic districts, hillsides and an adobe
Whittier is a city of historic districts. Central Park, Hadley-Greenleaf, College Hills and a cluster on Earlham Drive are designated, and they hold many Craftsman and Spanish Colonial Revival homes. Uptown Whittier is the traditional business core around Philadelphia Street and Greenleaf Avenue. Whittier College was founded by Quakers and named for the poet John Greenleaf Whittier, and Pio Pico State Historic Park preserves El Ranchito, the adobe home of California’s last Mexican governor.
Older houses keep older textiles. The median home was built in 1956 and nearly a third predate 1950, so rugs that have lain in one room for decades deserve a careful description on the call. Before a rug goes to a dry cleaner, the Carpet and Rug Institute says to call first, since many dry cleaners do not clean rugs and some rugs are labeled dry-clean only.
The hills matter too. Roughly a third of Whittier’s land lies in the county’s Very High fire hazard zone, which is why air duct questions come up after smoke in the hillside areas.
Craftsman, ranch and apartment homes
A typical home from 1956
Nearly a third of homes predate 1950 and half date from the two decades after, with only a few from this century.
SourceMostly owner-occupied houses
Close to six homes in ten are owner-occupied. Nearly two thirds of units are detached houses, and one in seven sits in a building of two to nine units.
SourceSome mid-size buildings
Buildings of ten or more units hold about one unit in eight, so say which kind of building you live in when you call.

Rugs first, then floors, then ducts
Houses of this age often have area rugs on wood or tile floors, which makes rug cleaning the first request, with carpet cleaning for bedrooms and halls. In the hillside areas, air duct cleaning comes up after smoke. The county says to consider it, with a MERV 13 filter, in homes with central HVAC, while the EPA says routine cleaning is not needed.
- Area rug cleaningShag, woven and delicate rugs. The fiber decides the method, so viscose and Oriental rugs get a careful look first, and some rugs are better washed in a plant.
- Carpet cleaningHot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning. Hot water and solution go in, and suction pulls the dirt back out.
- Air duct cleaningFor ducts with visible mold, vermin or heavy dust and debris. EPA does not recommend it as a routine job, so ask us whether yours needs it.
