Desert wind, long hot summers and a very old hotel
Lancaster sits on the floor of the Antelope Valley, a dry place that gets about 7 inches of rain a year and has long, hot summers. The valley’s air quality district says its particle pollution is mostly fugitive dust, lifted by local sources and by region-wide dust whenever the wind turns moderate to high. That dust does not stay outside. It rides in on shoes, through doors and onto sofas, and the Carpet and Rug Institute says to clean carpet as needed and at least every 24 months, with surroundings, pets and use moving the interval.
Downtown carries the older history. The Western Hotel Museum, a nineteenth-century hotel, is the oldest standing structure in Lancaster, and The BLVD along Lancaster Boulevard is a designated California Cultural District. The shops and offices along that stretch are commercial carpet, which is part of the service list.
Water comes mostly from a county waterworks district, pumped from groundwater of moderate hardness. That makes the rinse the useful thing to ask any cleaner about.
Newer homes, rentals and a mobile-home share
Mostly newer homes
Only about a third of homes predate 1980. Newer carpet may still be under a maker’s warranty, and the institute says skipping the manufacturer’s maintenance advice can void one.
SourceA city that made solar standard
Lancaster became the first U.S. city to require solar panels on all new homes, a rule that took effect in 2014. Homes built under that rule are recent, so say how old the carpet is when you call.
SourceMostly houses, with rentals and mobile homes
About six homes in ten are owner-occupied, and most are single-family houses. A small share are mobile homes, so say which kind of home it is when you call.
SourceFire exposure on the map
Roughly a quarter of Lancaster’s land sits in the Very High fire hazard tier. After smoke or ash, Los Angeles County Public Health advises a HEPA-filter vacuum rather than an ordinary one, and says to wash or discard porous items such as linens and carpets.

What dust asks of a floor
Carpet cleaning comes first in a valley where dust is a constant, and upholstery cleaning follows because sofas collect the same fine particles. Air duct cleaning deserves a conversation, with one caveat. The EPA does not recommend it routinely, and it names visible mold, vermin and ducts clogged with dust and debris as reasons to do it. Ask by phone before deciding.
- Carpet cleaningHot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning. Hot water and solution go in, and suction pulls the dirt back out.
- Upholstery & leather cleaningSofas, chairs and leather. The cleaning code on the tag (W, S, W/S or X) tells us whether the fabric takes water, solvent or neither.
- Air duct cleaningFor ducts with visible mold, vermin or heavy dust and debris. EPA does not recommend it as a routine job, so ask us whether yours needs it.
Beyond the Lancaster city limits
Palmdale is next door on the valley floor, and the same phone number and request form cover it along with every other city in the county.
