A big, mostly newer city under smog and foothill fire zones

Fontana has about 221,000 residents, and most of its homes are newer. The median home dates from 1989: 28.1 percent of units were built before 1980, 39.8 percent in 1980 to 1999 and 32 percent in 2000 or later. The housing element counts about 80 percent of units as detached houses, 15 percent as multi-family and 2 percent as mobile homes, and it names neighborhoods such as Walnut Village, Sierra Lakes, Hunter’s Ridge and Southridge.

Air is the local weather story. Fontana’s General Plan says ozone and fine particulate levels in the Inland Empire are among the highest in the country, partly because west winds push smog toward San Bernardino and Riverside counties, where the mountains contain it. The county hazard plan adds strong Santa Ana winds in fall and winter. Fine particles that settle indoors end up in carpet pile, on upholstery and at the registers, which is where a cleaning helps.

Much of the land that is still undeveloped lies in High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, the General Plan’s safety chapter says, and CAL FIRE lists the August 2021 South Fire at 680 acres near Sierra Avenue and Lytle Creek Road, with 900 structures threatened. Most water comes from Fontana Water Company, with West Valley Water District serving portions of the city. The company’s 2025 report lists hardness of 134 milligrams per liter in surface water from its Summit plant, with readings from 106 to 162.

  1. Most of it arrived after 1980

12.9 percent of units predate 1960. The housing element says the rest came mostly in the 1980 to 2009 boom, and only about 3 percent dates from after 2010.

What suits a large city with heavy air

Carpet cleaning is the base job in a city of mostly detached houses. Air duct cleaning is a fair question where particulate runs high, although the EPA’s reasons are visible mold, vermin or ducts clogged with dust and debris. Upholstery cleaning handles what fabric collects from dust or smoke.

  • Carpet cleaning in FontanaHot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning. Hot water and solution go in, and suction pulls the dirt back out.
  • Air duct cleaning in FontanaFor ducts with visible mold, vermin or heavy dust and debris. EPA does not recommend it as a routine job, so ask us whether yours needs it.
  • Upholstery & leather cleaning in FontanaSofas, chairs and leather. The cleaning code on the tag (W, S, W/S or X) tells us whether the fabric takes water, solvent or neither.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.

  • Crystal M.

My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.

  • Daniel R.

Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.

Questions from Fontana

Is Fontana’s air really a problem for my home?
The General Plan says Inland Empire ozone and fine particle levels are among the highest in the country, because west winds push smog against the mountains. What reaches a given house varies by day. Registers, filters and upholstery are where it tends to show, so look there before ordering any duct work.
Who supplies water in Fontana, and how hard is it?
Fontana Water Company serves most of the city, and West Valley Water District serves portions. The company’s 2025 report lists surface water from its Summit plant at 134 milligrams per liter of hardness, with readings from 106 to 162. Check the name on your bill.
Did wildfire smoke reach Fontana in 2021?
CAL FIRE lists the South Fire of August 2021 at 680 acres near Sierra Avenue and Lytle Creek Road, with 900 structures threatened and nine destroyed. For smoke odor in a home, ask about rugs, sofas and drapes first, since fabric holds it longest.
I rent in Fontana. Who books the carpet cleaning?
Read the lease first. About a third of Fontana’s occupied homes are rented, and some leases name a method or want a receipt at move-out. Then note the unit, the floor and where a visitor can park.
How long will carpet take to dry in the summer heat?
The Riverside weather station, about 11 miles away, averages a July high near 94 degrees and 9.86 inches of precipitation a year. The Carpet and Rug Institute says drying often takes 6 to 12 hours and depends on humidity, airflow and carpet type.
