Foothill fire history, 1980s homes and one water district
The Housing Element says most Rancho Cucamonga homes were built before 1990, mainly in the 1970s and 1980s, and federal estimates put the median home at 1988: 29 percent of units predate 1980 and 30.1 percent were built in 2000 or later. About 9.7 percent of the stock is older than 50 years. The element names districts such as Alta Loma, Cucamonga, Etiwanda, Red Hill, Terra Vista and Victoria. Across the city, 62.5 percent of units are detached houses and 21.5 percent sit in buildings of five or more.
The foothills set the fire story. The city’s draft safety element says the 2003 Grand Prix Fire burned a large part of the wildland-urban interface next to the national forest and destroyed 15 homes in the city, CAL FIRE lists the 2014 Etiwanda Fire at 2,143 acres just north of town, and the element warns that Santa Ana winds can carry burning embers over a mile and start new fires well ahead of the main fire. Smoke that follows the wind into a house is held by upholstery and drapes and reaches the air handler.
The Cucamonga Valley Water District supplies the city and portions of its neighbors. In 2025 about 51 percent of its supply was groundwater, 41 percent imported State Water Project water and 8 percent canyon and tunnel water. Its report lists total hardness averaging 125.5 milligrams per liter, with readings from 109 to 142.

Fabric and ducts after fire season
Upholstery cleaning and air duct cleaning follow a smoke event, because fabric holds odor and registers can show soot, although the EPA calls duct cleaning a needed job rather than a routine one. Carpet cleaning remains the base across houses and apartments.

I particularly liked the way the lead cleaner described the PH balance of the solutions that they were using on our carpets. The acidic neutralizing rinse makes sure the floor doesn’t feel crunchy or sticky when it is dry. That extra step means our floors are very silky and totally residue-free.
My kids have turned the giant living room ottoman into a trampoline and it's forever soiled with imprints. Steam cleaning the hefty cloth removed all the dark grime and restored the original bright blue hue. The furniture which is the focus is clean and the living space appears a lot tidier today.
Thick outdoor seats were covered in tree algae and bird poop. Power-washings of the tough material killed any dirt from outside. We are pleased to be hosting barbecues from our clean chairs again.
